
The RGS has a large number of Clubs and societies that meet both during lunch-time and after school. These cover a wide range of interests from History to Engineering. A modest subscription fee to help with Club running costs is payable is some cases. Details of the individual clubs and societies can be found below.
Name: Amateur Radio Club Who: Mr. Bell When: Mon, lunchtime Eligibility:All
Amateur Radio is a technical hobby to communicate with other amateurs. Voice contacts can be made directly with others or by means of 'Packet Radio', computer text messages or pictures may be sent to other people. Transmission requires a licence, and training courses are run at the school to provide pupils with licence and callsign. It is a hobby which suits any age group. Where: F12, F13
Name:Amnesty Group Who: Mrs Goodman When: Fri, 1.15 Eligibility: All
Amnesty International is a world wide voluntary organisation that works to prevent some of the gravest violations by governments of people's basic human rights. Its 1.1 million members campaign against such violations. Our aim is to support this work by letter writing, petition signing and awareness-raising events. All new members are warmly welcomed.Where: L37
Name: Badminton Club Who: Mr Knight When: Fri, 5-6.20pm Eligibility: 3rd Year and above
White kit and non-marking tennis shoes or plimsolls are essential, as is your own racket. The First VI normally enter the Under 19 Surrey league. A modest subscription is payable. Where: Spectrum

There are three teams. U14, U16 and U19. U14 and U16 teams play regularly in the District League, and the U14's are current champions. Shooting practise is encouraged when the gym is free. Where: Gym
Name: Big Band Who: Mr Wilson When: Tues, 1.10 Eligibility: Wind and Brass players above grade 5
The band has a very high reputation locally and has just recorded a CD of jazz numbers. Last summer they toured Spain. Where: School Room
Name: Bridge Who: TBA When: Every weekday lunchtime Eligibility: 4th and above
In its current incarnation, the Bridge Club is open every weekday lunchtime for serious bridge players or learners in the 4th year or above. Where: TBA
Name: Chamber Orchestra Who: Mr White When: Thurs, 1.10 Eligibility: Grade 5 and above
This is the RGS boys' main orchestra, and plays a classical repertoire at chamber concerts and other events. Where: School Room
Name: Chess Club Who: Mr Thorn When: Daily 12.45-1.45, Tues 4-5pm Eligibility: All
The Chess Club meets daily and provides the opportunity for budding grandmasters, or the vast majority of mere mortals to play serious or friendly games or to seek advice from the school's stronger players. All for the ridiculously low price of 50p! The school enters three teams in the Surrey Senior League, and a junior team in the Guildford U13 league. Where: F23

A small chamber choir which performs regularly at local venues, and which has recently been on tour to Venice and France. Where: Big School
Name: Christian Union Who: Mr Knight When: Fri. 1.15pm Eligibility: Fifth and Sixth Years
The Christian Union exists to foster personal relationships with God and to make Him known. This is achieved through talks from visiting speakers, shared experiences, bible studies and the occasional joint meeting with other schools. Where: F36
Name: Debating Society Who: Mr Muller When: Lunch and occasionally 4pm Eligibility: 4th-6th years
The debating society meets fortnightly. Years 1-3 are invited to debates when appropriate and there are inter-school debates approximately every term. We debate a wide variety of issues with a range of speakers. Where: F22

The History Society is in effect run by the students of the RGS, with Mr Saxton as on overseer. Events include a large number of impressive talks, quizzes, guest speakers and field trips - such as the forth coming trip to the Welsh Marches. Where: F33

The group meets to produce a 4th and 5th year magazine which invites contributions for its termly publication. Writing of all sorts, comment and opinion, reviews and art work are all welcome. The editorial team organises and solicits material, plans layout and arranges for publication. Where: F39
Name: Insight Who: Mr Jenkins When: Wed, 1.15-1.45 Eligibility: 3rd and 4th
Insight meets weekly to look at the Christian Faith and its' relevance in today's society. All 3rd and 4th years are welcome, regardless of what they believe. Meetings are divided into talks from guest speakers, bible studies, videos and occasional personal testimonies. Where: F21
Name: Junior Concert Band Who: Mr White When: Tues, 8.30am Eligibility: Wind players below grade 5
Similar in style to the Big Band, the Concert band performs regularly at informal concerts each term. Where: M1
Name: Junior Drama Society Who: Mr Paterson When: Tues, Wed, Thur, Fri, 1.20pm Eligibility: Years 1-4
The drama sessions involve a variety of drama role plays and improvisation. Some of the work leads to productions for those who are interested. Tuesdays are for first years, Wednesdays for second years, Thursdays for third years, and Fridays for fourth years. Where: Drama Studio
Name: Literary Society Who: Dr Hansford When: Varies Eligibility: Of most interest to the 6th Yr
A society which meets to hear papers and to discuss matters relating to literature and literary culture. Students and staff as well as visiting speakers participate. Where: F39
Name: Model Railway Club Who: Mr ATJ Evans When: T, Th, Fri 1.10-1.50, T & Th 4-5 Eligibility: All
For a subscription of £2 per term, boys can drive trains, make scenery and buildings, as well as chat about their hobby in a friendly atmosphere. The layout is an 00 gauge end-to-end layout, with a mixture of diesel and steam. An 009 narrow gauge line is under construction. Where: Near Art Block
Name: Philosophical Society Who: Mr Meadowcroft When: Thursday 1.15pm (usually) Eligibility: All
Talks are generally given by staff or boys on a wide range of philosophical issues, some deeper than others. These last around ten minutes, after which there is time for questions and discussion. Occasionally there are special events such as balloon debates or quizzes, which are always fun. New members are encouraged to come. Knowledge of philosophy unnecessary. Where: F22
Name: Photography Club Who: Mr Richardson When: Mon & Thurs lunchtimes Eligibility: All
If you want to learn how to develop black and white films or photographs, or improve on your photographic skills, then this is the place to come. You will need to contribute to the cost of chemicals and paper. Where: Dark Room (G21)
Name: Politics Society Who: Mr Wain When: Mon, 1.20 Eligibility: All
The group takes an active interest in current affairs, discusses and debates political issues both within the society and on an inter-school basis, arranges visiting speakers and visits to Parliament and seeks to establish and maintain contact with political institutions. Where: F35
Name: Public Speaking Who: Mr Whittaker When: TBA (Flexible) Eligibility: 4th Year and above
Teams are drawn from volunteers and prepared for participation in two competitions - the Observer / English Speaking Union and the Rotary Club. The first is a national competition for under 16s, the other local and open. Teams learn the skills of chairing, speaking and questioning, and develop the skills of speaking with clarity, humour and authority. Where: TBA

The team solicits, edits and collates material for termly publications aimed at the Sixth Form, and invites contributions including creative and discursive writing, reviews, and miscellaneous material broadly concerned with culture and ideas. Where: F39
Name: School Choir Who: Mr White When: Mon, Wed, Fri 1.10 Eligibility: All
The choir plays a very prominent role in school music and performs at the Carol Service, Remeberance service and every other year performs a large musical work, the most recent being Poulenc's Gloria. There is room for all voices, and any willing volunteers should speak to Mr White. Where: M1

The senior orchestra combining with Tormead and the High School to perform a challenging repertoire and to provide a platform for local soloists. Where: School Room
Name: Spotlight Who: Mrs Brown When: Thursday, 1.20-1.50(flexible) Eligibility: Years 1-3
Spotlight is a magazine published two or three times a year. It contains articles, features, interviews, reviews, competitions, short stories, poetry and so on, written and submitted by boys in Year 1-3. The Editorial Team meets regularly throughout the year to collate material, design and produce the magazine. Where: F43
Name: Squash Club Who: Mr Weaver, and Mr George When: Thursdays 4.30-5.30pm Eligibility: All
Squash Club meets at the squash courts at Spectrum every Thursday. The First V compete in the Surrey League and friendly matches are arranged for other age groups. Boys can compete on the school squash ladder. There is a subscription charge of £5. White(ish) kit and non-marking soles are required. Where: Spectrum

Open to all string players below the standard of grade 5. Termly concerts. Where: Hamonde Room
Name: Young Engineers Club Who: Mr AC Evans, Mr Milton, and Mr Jones When: Tues, 4-5 Eligibility: All
Pupils may work on individual projects based on school work or develop additional ideas. Additional help from outside engineers is available. Work may be entered for the Young Engineers' Competitions, both locally and nationally. Where: L16, B01
