Blue Nose Poets in the Pink

The Blue Nose Poets Sue Hubbard and Mario Petrucci are having a bumper year.

Sue Hubbard has just secured the unique position of Public Art Poet as part of the Poetry Society's "Poetry Places" scheme. Synchronicity was in the air, for within a week Mario Petrucci had been awarded a New London Writers Award from the London Arts Board. Sue and Mario have also launched a novel poetry service, Calliopia, which offers a wide range of poetry skills to colleges, poetry venues and festivals.

The Blue Nose has a key role in devising and organising London-based poetry events, and has been endorsed by the London Arts Board with augmentation of their funding. In addition, Blue Nose recently launched a residential writing course at the 13th century Abbey near Abingdon. The inaugural course was sold out. Blue Nose is also a partner with the environmental organisation "Common Ground" in running a series of highly successful competitions based around environmental themes.

The backgrounds of the Blue Nose Poets are diverse. Sue Hubbard is founder of the group and reviews regularly as art critic for Time Out. Her collection, Everything Begins with the Skin is published by Enitharmon. Mario Petrucci has a doctorate in optoelectronics and for a time milked goats on a remote island in the west of Ireland. His first book of poems, Shrapnel and Sheets, won a PBS Recommendation. He founded the experimental performance group ShadoWork, launched this summer at the Poetry Society. Denis Timm, the third leg of the Blue Nose tripod, was an astronomer at University College London where he is now a computer hardware specialist.

This remarkable combination of talents and experience has contributed to Blue Nose's reputation for quality events at the cutting edge of contemporary literature. One participant at their regular Tuesday poetry workshops remarked: "No other poetry organisation I know rivals their depth of experience or offers such sympathetically honest support." Certainly, Blue Nose ideas have often set the style for other venues and groups. They see this "seeding" role as an important part of what they do. They are currently expanding their activities into arts-based venues, constantly seeking to set up major new initiatives in London.
