Berry Marine Consultants Invited to
Address International Expert Meeting
on Offshore Oil & Gas Activities

Chris Berry, senior consultant with Berry Marine Consultants,
was recently invited to address the International Expert Meeting
on Environmental Practices in Offshore Oil and Gas Activities,
held in the Netherlands during November '97.

Convened by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable
Development, the objective of the expert meeting was to achieve
a broad exchange of information on the national and regional
practices in relation to offshore hydrocarbon exploitation and
the environment.

"During the past year, the consultancy has undertaken a substantial
body of work relating to offshore oil and gas development and the
environment", commented Chris Berry. "It certainly is an honour
to have this work recognised by being invited to address such an
important and influential group of experts, and thanks must go to
all those involved in the consultancy, who have contributed so
effectively in this area", he added.

Berry Marine Consultants have recently undertaken energy related
work on behalf of the World Wide Fund for Nature and the Oil
and Gas Environmental Consortium, amongst other organisations.
This has resulted in the production of reports covering areas such
as environmental impact assessment and environmental best practice
in the offshore hydrocarbon sector, as well as analyses of proposed
developments in the 'Atlantic Frontier' region of the UK
continental shelf.

Work on Biodiversity Action
Planning Process Progresses

A comprehensive analysis of the UK biodiversity action
planning process and its application to the marine environment
is currently being carried out by Berry Marine Consultants.

The project, which is being undertaken on behalf of a consortium
of environmental organisations, is designed to examine the progress
toward the conservation of UK marine biodiversity, that has taken
place since the ratification of the Biodiversity Convention, in 1993.

Ultimately, the results of the work will be used to determine how
best non-government organisations can most effectively utilise their
resources, to enable them to actively contribute to the biodiversity
conservation process for marine species and habitats.

Consultancy's Media Work
Scores a Double Success

Today, the ability to convey environmental information often
has equal status to environmental research itself. Accordingly,
during the summer, Berry Marine Consultants has played a
key role in two high profile environmental media events.

In May, Chris Berry, BMC's senior consultant, spearheaded
the UK-launch of the Reader's Digest Good Beach Guide.
This was swiftly followed by Berry Marine Consultants
playing a key role in promoting World Oceans Day,
within Scotland.

"Many organisations now recognise the necessity of successfully
promoting environmental information and messages", commented
Chris Berry. "We certainly see this area of work becoming
increasingly important to the Consultancy", he added.
